Inovação dos pagamentos nos transportes

A few months ago, a study carried out by Visa with around 20,000 people from various countries revealed that 441,000,000 respondents favoured public transport to get to work or school, compared to 541,000,000 who said they preferred private means (car or motorbike, for example).

Among the reasons why more than half of the study population said they preferred to use their car over public transport were things as diverse as overcrowding, journey time, cleanliness and, most notably, payment methods.

The need to buy different tickets for different types of journey (44% of respondents), not knowing the price (42%) and the fact that some services can only be paid for with cash (41%) were the main obstacles to using public transport.

Innovation in payments favours mobility

At a time when climate change is threatening the planet and the increase in the number of private cars is constraining mobility and generating unacceptable levels of air pollution in large cities, to which we can add the issue of hygiene and safety due to the pandemic, the promotion and encouragement of the use of public transport is more than ever on the table.

As we've seen, one of the biggest obstacles to using public transport is payment methods. In order to overcome this barrier, cities such as Stockholm or London have put their faith in payment methods based on contactless technology.

In the Swedish capital, notes and coins have been abolished on buses and replaced by contactless payments through a card or smartphone, while in London the introduction of this technology in its transport system has led to a cost reduction of 35% (approximately 100 million euros) for the operator, in addition, of course, to gains in time and convenience for users when paying for their journeys.

In Portugal, this wave of innovation in public transport payments is also already making itself felt and promises to revolutionise the way we pay for our journeys on the metro, bus or train.

The pilot project has the finger of UnicreThe new system will be developed by Transportes Intermodais do Porto (TIP) and Visa and will give Metro do Porto users the chance to use their mobile phones. contactless card (credit or debit) as a transport document.

The solution will first be implemented on up to four of the six lines of the Metro do Porto network and will allow customers to optimise their choice of the best fare. In addition to reducing waiting times when buying tickets and reducing the environmental impact of issuing physical tickets, this measure will reduce waiting times and avoid crowds when buying tickets, something that is extremely important as Portugal begins its deconfinement plan and public transport is expected to increase.
